Garlic Chives.................
Garlic chives are perennials and can be grown easily in any herb garden. The foliage is not hollow like flat, regular chives. They grow to about five inches high. The flower stalks grow up to 30 cm high, with greenish-white flowers that are quite conspicuous rounded.
Garlic chives can be as ordinary chives, where you want a subtle garlic flavor in uncooked dishes where raw regular garlic can be overwhelming or too spicy like to add, may be used. This herb is a great substitute for garlic salt and garlic powder.
This herb is particularly good in oriental dishes especially Oriental soups. Finely chopped leaves are added to large stir-frys and egg dishes.
As with regular chives, garlic chives are harvested by shearing of the leaves on the ground. Older leaves become coarse, so the plants time to shave even if you have no immediate use for the herb. So that the plants will produce the desirable tender shoots.
Garlic chives make a very small lamp, like a little green onion can be used. Harvest bulbs before the flower opens, while only a bud. Be sure to leave some bulbs in the soil, so that they continue to make more.
