The cultivation of cumin

Site: Caraway likes full sun and a rich loam, well drained soil.

Propagation: late spring or early fall is the best time to get the seeds in shallow (2.1 inches deep) to sow drill. Both shade and heavy soils are well tolerated. Cumin not good transplanted. Sowing, where they grow. The seed is to germinate slowly, while important weed control of the seedling.

Growing: Thin plants to about 6 to 8 inches apart when large enough. It seeds itself all the time. Cumin can also be grown indoors in a sunny location.

Harvesting: Gather leaves when young. Pick seed heads in late summer or when the seeds are brown. Dig up roots in the second year.

Culinary uses: Hang sun dried seed heads upside down over an open container and shake to remove. The seeds can be sprinkled meat, goulash, cabbage, or to flavor soups and sandwiches. Chopped young leaves can be cooked as a vegetable can be added to salads and soups and the roots.
